A Lecture on Florida's Convict Lease System

Join us for our latest Joseph House Lecture on Thursday, February 20th at 7PM: Florida’s Convict Lease System and its Legacy of Prison Abuse Presenter: Peter A. Cowdrey - Educator-in-Residence, Museum of Florida History

Please join us at Joseph House as we explore Florida’s infamous Convict Lease System, a time when Florida’s incarcerated were leased to businesses for the exploitation of prison labor. This system, which lasted from 1877 until 1923, was notorious for its brutality, and while it ended nearly a century ago, it established a violent legacy that has survived through the intervening decades. This program will feature slides of original photographs obtained from the Florida State Archives.
