Sonya Williams is one of our core volunteers. Her time with us is a model for what it means to share life together. Here she is reflecting on a life together with Gabriel:

"Our need for each other seems to be even greater during this pandemic. The scope and proximity of our daily interactions with loved ones has changed. In fear of infecting others or becoming infected, social events and gatherings have been eliminated. We need someone that cares to listen to our voice, console us, to look at us with eyes of compassion and mercy, to give us their time, to bring laughter and joy to darkness, and a warm embrace.

As a JH volunteer, I first met Gabriel at 6am because, interestingly enough, this was the time he chose to start his studies. He was so committed to complete the Refire Program (A culinary arts program specifically designed for formerly incarcerated) that his days were long and hard. His days began at 4am in order to catch the bus and continued into the late evening. I could not believe the amount of work he dedicated toward earning his certificate. Gabriel is artistic and cares deeply about keeping small memories relevant. Whether mailing Valentine ’s Day care packages or writing to the people he knew in prison, Gabriel enjoys putting a smile on someone’s face and sharing the joy."
